Instagram is reportedly testing a new feature called “locked posts,” enabling creators to restrict access to specific content through secret codes.
This development aims to provide creators with innovative ways to monetise their content and engage their audience.
According to the report, the “locked posts” feature allows creators to set a secret code for certain posts, which followers must enter to view the content.
This approach introduces an element of exclusivity, encouraging deeper interaction between creators and their audiences. It also offers potential for creators to monetise premium content by sharing access codes with subscribers or loyal followers.
This initiative aligns with Instagram’s ongoing efforts to support content creators in generating revenue directly through the platform. Previously, Instagram introduced features like Subscriptions, enabling creators to offer exclusive content to paying subscribers.
In June 2024, Meta, Instagram’s parent company, approved monetisation for content creators in Nigeria and Ghana, allowing them to earn money from ad revenue on Meta platforms, including Instagram and Facebook.
Similarly, in August 2024, Meta introduced monetisation tools for content creators in Kenya, including in-stream ads and Facebook ads on reels.
The “locked posts” feature could serve as an additional tool for creators to provide premium content, further enhancing their monetisation strategies
The introduction of secret codes for content access also reflects Instagram’s commitment to innovating user engagement. By incorporating interactive elements, the platform seeks to foster a more dynamic and personalised user experience.

This approach not only benefits creators but also enhances the overall engagement of the platform’s user base.
However, the implementation of such features raises discussions about digital exclusivity and its implications for online communities. While exclusivity can enhance the perceived value of content and strengthen creator-audience relationships, it may also lead to concerns about accessibility and inclusivity within the platform.
Striking a balance between offering exclusive content and maintaining an inclusive community will be crucial for Instagram as it continues to develop and test new features.
As Instagram continues to experiment with features like “locked posts,” the platform demonstrates its commitment to evolving in response to the needs of creators and users alike. These innovations not only provide creators with more tools to monetise their content but also contribute to a more engaging and interactive user experience.
