The news

  • Interpol’s Operation Red Card led to 306 arrests across seven African countries.
  • South African authorities apprehended 40 individuals and seized over 1,000 SIM cards linked to SIM box fraud.
  • Collaborative efforts involved countries like Nigeria, Rwanda, and Zambia.

In a concerted effort to combat cybercrime, Interpol’s Operation Red Card has resulted in the arrest of 306 individuals across seven African countries. Conducted between November 2024 and February 2025, the operation aimed to dismantle cross-border criminal networks responsible for significant harm to individuals and businesses.

South African law enforcement played a pivotal role in this crackdown, apprehending 40 suspects and confiscating more than 1,000 SIM cards and 53 computers. These were linked to a sophisticated SIM box fraud scheme where international calls are rerouted as local ones, often facilitating large-scale SMS phishing attacks.

The broader operation targeted scams involving mobile banking, investment, and messaging apps, with cases affecting over 5,000 victims. Countries such as Nigeria, Rwanda, and Zambia collaborated in this initiative, underscoring the transnational nature of cyber threats. In Nigeria, for instance, authorities arrested 130 individuals, including 113 foreign nationals, linked to online casino and investment fraud.

This crackdown highlights the escalating challenge of cybercrime in Africa. The continent’s increasing Internet penetration has made it a fertile ground for cybercriminal activities, necessitating robust international cooperation. Operations like Red Card are crucial in disrupting these networks and mitigating their impact on victims.

The operation’s outcomes also emphasise the importance of proactive measures and continuous vigilance in the digital realm. As cybercriminals employ increasingly sophisticated techniques, law enforcement agencies must adapt and collaborate to stay ahead. The confiscation of devices and SIM cards not only disrupts current operations but also provides valuable intelligence for preventing future crimes.

Interpol’s Operation Red Card marks a significant milestone in the fight against cybercrime in Africa. The collaborative efforts of multiple countries demonstrate a unified commitment to safeguarding digital spaces and protecting citizens from cyber threats.
