South Africa has initiated the development of a new smart city in Shongweni, near Durban, with the first phase launching today, March 27, 2025. Dubbed Westown, the project is anticipated to attract approximately R15 billion ($822 million) in private-sector investment over the next 10 to 15 years and is projected to generate more than 23,000 jobs.

Per MyBroadband, the initial phase encompasses the construction of retail spaces, residential units, and healthcare facilities, strategically located just off the N3 highway near Hillcrest. This development aims to enhance the area’s infrastructure and provide essential services to the local community.

Themba Masimula, senior project manager from the eThekwini Municipality’s Catalytic Projects Unit, highlighted that planning for this development began 15 years ago.

The project’s goal is to alter the development trajectory of the region, fostering economic growth and urban transformation.

This initiative is part of South Africa’s broader strategy to establish smart cities that integrate advanced technologies and sustainable practices to improve urban living.

Similar projects, such as the Nkuna Smart City in Limpopo, have been launched to stimulate local economies and create employment opportunities.

The Shongweni smart city project reflects the government’s commitment to leveraging technological innovation and strategic planning to address urbanisation challenges and promote inclusive economic development.

While the current focus is on Shongweni, the vision extends far beyond. The South African government has embarked on a broader smart city strategy, with similar developments proposed in the Gauteng and Limpopo provinces.

However, these developments often involve collaborations between governments and technology firms to implement advanced infrastructure and intelligent systems.

For instance, Lagos State in Nigeria has partnered with Huawei Technologies to deploy Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) aimed at enhancing traffic management and road safety.

This initiative includes the installation of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and Traffic Management Solution (TMS) devices, contributing to Lagos’ smart city ambitions by leveraging advanced technology to improve urban mobility and reduce congestion.

Similarly, Zimbabwe has introduced an AI-driven traffic management system in its capital, Harare, to address urban congestion. The system utilizes real-time data to optimize traffic flow and reduce accidents.

These examples underscore a continental shift towards integrating technology into urban development. As South Africa embarks on its Shongweni smart city project, it joins a growing list of African nations investing in intelligent infrastructure to create sustainable, efficient, and livable urban environments.
