UCT partners with Zurich to bring Web3 school to Africa

Blockchain education in Africa is making significant strides forward. The University of Cape Town (UCT), in partnership with the University of Zurich, has launched the continent’s first in-person blockchain summer school, bringing structured Web3 training to African students at scale.

The programme, Deep Dive into Blockchain, began on July 28 and is being held at UCT’s campus in Cape Town. It brings together 40 students from across the continent, offering two weeks of hands-on learning on topics such as smart contracts, decentralised finance (DeFi), blockchain regulation, and digital identity. This is the first time the course, originally hosted in Switzerland, is being offered on African soil.

Africa has become one of the fastest-growing crypto markets in the world, but access to formal blockchain education has lagged. Startups continue to rise across Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, yet many struggle to find trained developers and blockchain-savvy professionals. This programme directly addresses that gap by combining technical instruction with regional context, tailored to Africa’s unique digital finance challenges.

The course is led by UCT’s Financial Innovation Hub and the University of Zurich Blockchain Centre, with teaching support from international academics and Web3 practitioners. Participants were selected through a competitive application process, representing a mix of students, entrepreneurs, and early-stage builders from at least 10 African countries.

By hosting this programme, UCT signals a long-term commitment to blockchain education and positions South Africa as one of the leaders in Africa’s Web3 future. It’s not just about learning the tech, it’s about equipping local talent to build the tools, protocols, and policies that will define the next phase of digital infrastructure across the continent.
